costume craft

My favorite part about Halloween is the costumes. I love coming up with ideas, making them, perfecting details, and seeing everyone else's costumes. I really wish there could be a city-wide costume parade just so I could see what everyone is wearing.

This year I wasn't feeling very enthusiastic about the whole holiday. I just wasn't in the mood to do any of it: coming up with an idea, making a costume, getting all dressed up, going to parties, etc. But then I finalized my costume idea and the excitement was born.

Unicorn. This magical, mythical creature was the key to my excitement.

So I had my idea, next came the actual creation of the costume. I love creating costumes from things I have or things I make. That's my favorite part. It challenges my creativity and I feel like I've accomplished something worth showing off.

I already had bright, shiny, purple leggings. All I needed was a horn, and something to make it magical. Turns out, a tutu makes everything magical. Surprise. So, after spending some quality time at the fabric store waiting for my tulle to get cut, it was off to sister-time-costume-creation-craft-night. Abigail and I got together to create our costumes (she was Minnie Mouse). The tutu took longer than I thought. Cutting 10 yards of tulle into 4 inch strips is tedious and slightly painful. Then I took three strips and tied them around a piece of elastic. After I had used up all the tulle, only half of the elastic was covered. I redid the whole thing by taking only two pieces of tulle together to tie around the elastic. It took a very long time but it was worth it.

Abigail helped me with the horn. We took an empty paper towel roll, cut it up the side, formed it into a cone, duct taped it, covered it in sparkly craft foam, and glued a gold ribbon around it. After attaching it to a headband with Abigail's mad engineering skills, we had created a pretty awesome unicorn horn.

Friday night was the initiation of the unicorn costume. Everything went perfectly and I felt as magical as I could have.

So awesome! The tutu is amazing, it looks like it was really hard to make. The horn is also very impressive, I want to see it up close to see how you attached it to the headband. I'm glad you had a great Halloween weekend rocking your costume! You look so adorable and magical. Cutest unicorn ever!
